PIERCING AFTERCARE

What to expect

Swelling, itching and tenderness will always occur with a fresh piercing. Depending on the area you were pierced swelling can last anywhere from 1 – 8 weeks. As the piercing starts to heal you will experience drainage of a whitish/yellowish fluid that will get crusty on your jewelry. Do not pick or scratch at dried up crusties.

Daily Cleaning

  • If your piercing feels comfortable and is not irritated, you do not need to use saline or hypochlorous acid. Clean and warm water will suffice.

  • Clean your piercing 1-2x per day using warm water or recommended aftercare spray.

  • Spray both sides of the piercing to fully irrigate the area and help remove any debris or buildup.

  • Gently pat away excess moisture with a clean paper towel or gauze. (Excess moisture can lead to irritation; you may also use a blow dryer on a cool setting to ensure the area is completely dry.)

  • If needed, you may use a fiber-free swab to get in tight spaces.

Shower Care

  • Your most effective cleaning will occur in the shower.

  • Allow warm water to run over the piercing for several minutes. This helps loosen and drain any stubborn debris and promotes healthy healing.

Important Do's and Don'ts

  • Do not twist, rotate, or remove your jewelry during the healing period.

  • Avoid harsh products. Do NOT use Betadine, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, tea tree oil, or any product not specifically recommended by your piercer.

  • Avoid pressure. Do not sleep on your healing piercing. Side sleepers often benefit from using an airplane pillow.

  • Keep beauty products away from the area. Avoid contact with makeup, moisturizers, shampoo, conditioners, and hair products.

  • Do not submerge your piercing in pools, hot tubs, oceans, lakes, or rivers for the first 4-8 weeks.

Downsizing your jewelry

  • If your piercing requires downsizing (switching to a shorter post once swelling decreases), please remember to return for this service.

  • Sleeping on a non-downsized piercing or leaving excess bar length can cause irritation, shifting, or crooked healing.

  • Plan to downsize between 5-8 weeks, or once swelling has reduced and the post moves freely forward and backward.

If You Notice a Bump

  • Bumps are common and usually temporary.

  • Ensure you are consistently following the recommended aftercare for 1-2 weeks before scheduling a consultation.

  • Proper care will typically resolve these bumps without additional treatment.

Nipples and Navels

Avoid tight or restrictive clothing, excessive friction or rough play. Refrain from certain types of abdominal or chest exercises for the first few days. Care should be taken when pulling clothing on or off over the head. Keep personal hygiene products out of and away from the piercing.
